Has 2023 given us too many games??

By Yonugggaming on July 11, 2023

2023 has been the best year in gaming in the last decade
But is that a good or bad thing????
Is there such a thing as too many games? Are we being overloaded with releases? For context let’s go over the insane amount of games we’ve gotten in 2023

Hi-Fi Rush  January 25

Dead Space Remake January 27

Hogwarts Legacy  February 10

Wild Hearts February 17

Atomic Heart February 21

PSVR 2 Launch plus Horizon Call of the Mountain February 22

Sons of the Forest (PC) February 23

Destiny 2: Lightfall DLC February 28

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty  March 3

Deceive, Inc. March 21

Resident Evil 4 Remake March 24

Dead Island 2  April 21

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor April 28

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom May 12

Lego 2K Drive May 19

Street Fighter 6 June 2

Diablo IV June 6

Crash Team Rumble  June 20

Final Fantasy 16 June 22

The wildest part of it all is that we are only 7 months in! There's still Game of The Year contenders like Spider-Man  2 and Starfield coming this fall which also makes this the first year in awhile that all major platforms (Xbox Nintendo and PlayStation) will all have Game of the Year contenders

So why is this bad??
During this era of instant gratification and social media, many games are here today gone tomorrow. It feels as if we get a week of a game before everyone is on to the next thing. One reason is the release windows of games are overlapping, such as Dead Island 2 and Star Wars Jedi Survivor, which were seven days apart. Two months later we got Diablo 4 and Street Fighter 6 only four days apart. We’ve seen similar dilemmas in the movie industry. When too many blockbusters are released in close proximity it forces the average consumer to choose, and ultimately something will end up under-appreciated. In the case of video games it is a catch 22, either cannot afford to shell out $70 twice in a two week span, or you can afford to buy the games, but can’t find the free time to focus on all of them at once. This entire year we’ve seen games with immense hype for months leading up to release, only for gamers to enjoy it for less than two weeks. Coupled with the growing trend of “Speedruns” and Voila! Games just don't have the longevity that they used to.

As the old saying goes “Better to have, and not need, than to need, and not have”. At the end of the day this is a great problem for gamers , I mean when is the last time you’ve said “I can’t decide what to play”? For better or worse 2023 will be remembered as an insane year that blessed us with some banger titles, this year is halfway gone and it has been an absolute pleasure thus far to enjoy all of these games. “I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you actually left them”. 2023 are the good old days of gaming.
